back in the day before AIM MSN YAHOO and ICQ there was IRC(Internet Relay Chat) Not the orignial but definatly the best chat network ever developed. Still in use by hundreds of thousands if not millions of users today.
I think its like UBI.com (more stable) that allows you to discuss tactics before going into a mission, loading a game up. You can chat, share files and its dam old.

Yeah, theres lots of IRC Clients, mIRC I think is pretty popular for Windows.
I use X-Chat myself.
Mozilla/SeaMonkey has Chatzilla.
Opera (Web Browser) has it's own IRC (as well as e-mail client)

You connect to a server then you type /join #channelname and join the channel. Commands are /command arguments

Think of it as a chat room for the game, or something like WON in SWAT3.
Havn't seen what it has to do /w BF2 yet though I'm still on the last patched version.
