Windows XP crashed a few days ago. The system suddenly froze, and after the reboot i got a message that windows\system32\config\system was damaged. And I don't have any recent backup of the system-file to bring back to the config map. Lame .
Well, at least I have Windows Vista installed on the D: partition, so I'll go over to Vista permanently from now on. I wont bother re-installing XP.

In my case, it has nothing to do with the internet connection/firewall (virus). I am behind a firewall + antivirus.
The system-file got damaged after a system crash. That can happen. So therefore it's important to backup the system-file from the "windows\repair" folder, which I have never (should have) done on this computer 8).
I just use dump and restore and keep fdisk handy
