WamomaW - PC Problem.

Hey guys...

The reason why I have been on RvS is becuz I got a problem with the hard drive. This is weird becuz I never heard of a problem like this. I unintsalled Quick Time and Macromedia Media Player and Shockwave, I was going to reinstall them, after I restarted my PC. My PC starts to boot up, I see the Windows XP sign, then it starts to go to the Log In Screen..., but it doesn't... . !?! :mad: The only thing that comes up is a Black Screen with the pointer. I reboot the PC, I get the same thing. Everytime I rebooted my PC, the same thing happened. Also, when I rebooted my PC, it asked me if I wanted to wanted to start In Safe Mode, Safe Mode in Networking, Safe Mode in Command Prompt, Last Good Known Setting, and Start Windows Normally. Everytime I started my PC in any Safe Mode it rebooted itself. If I picked Last Good Known Setting or Start Windows Normally, it starts up normally until it gets to the Sign In Screen and its just a Black Screen with the pointer... I tryed to reformat my PC with the WinXP CD, but all I got was DOS mode. That didn't help at all. It was like this for about 2 weeks, then I go to a friends house to format my hard drive cuz I couldn't for same reason, !?!, but my friend got all the stuff I wanted onto a DVD. So, I take My "Formated" hard drive back home put it back into my PC and it says "Error Loading OS." I put my WinXP CD into the disk drive and it just boots up into DOS mode and that didn't help that much...

I'm just at a friend's house so I can tell you guys the reason why you haven't seen me around.

If anyone knows the problem PLEASE let me know...

Have you tried booting from the windows cd?

If this does not work, then it could be a hardware problem. The last booting problems i had required the CMOS to be reset, which is a fiddly but painless task.

Try to boot from cd, or boot in safe mode and run some diagnostic software.

Yeah, I tried the Windows CD, but it just goes to the DOS mode.

I haven't tried that code. One of my Xbox Live friends said to try "fdisk," but that didn't work. I'll try it out.

It sounds like you need to reinstall windows. If you can get to DOS mode, I think you can start the installation process from there.

assuming you have the same functionality of the command prompt you can view the contents of the disk in DOS Mode. I can't even find fdisk on mine. (But I've never been able to call Windows directory structure logical)

Have you tried creating a emengcy boot floppy off of your friends computer?

Good article:

I would say boot off a Linux Live CD (like knoppix) and use it to reformat your hard drive if the Windows XP CD or emgboot stiff disks cannot do it. Knoppix comes with QTParted (like partition magic) which is very good, there should also be a fdisk or cfdisk command line programs if QTParted can't.

Yes fdisk is used just about every where in OS installations !

If you can do it, I'd use the Windows XP installer to do the partitioning/formating.

Try the boot floppy though, i tmight save you some probs

useful DOS based commmands (that work in cmd.exe)

dir = lists directory
cd Drive:\Path = changes directory, exmp. C:\Windows
Drive_Lettter: = CD's to drive. exmp. D:
help = lists commands
help cmd_name = lists help for command
