Reading is always a good way to learn ^_^, I've written a review of whats in the screen shot if you want to know (hyperlink referenced) but it'll probably bore you.

The Laptop is a Gateway MX6436 Notebook

It runs PC-BSD v1.4.1.1 (essentially FreeBSD 6-STABLE) as the Operating System.

It's equipped with Window Maker as the Graphical desktop environment presenting a NeXTSTEP style interface (Doom was written on NeXT machines).

Complete with a Dock (I use one on windows xp as well) and a pair of dockapps to provide a system tray & clock/calendar.

The program in the lower right hand corner is Amarok and puts iTunes to shame xD.

Above it is the dock and the 'menu' labeled Applications is window makers concept of a 'start menu' - only it's opened by right clicking the desktop instead of finding a button (because there are no conventional buttons, taskbars, or icons). And it cna also be dragged around and repositioned at will, even keeping it 'open' all the time if wanted.

The big window to the top-left showing multi-coloured text is a special Terminal Emulator that is made to behave as if it was 'transparent' inside it is running a text editor (vim) open to a source file for a program. From the screenshot on my journal you can see it is above the wall paper yet you can see the wall paper through it (basically transparent)

The wall paper is one of the several hundred in my collection and rotates randomly every 10 minutes to another of about 50 or so of them that I've specified using a small script I wrote.

My laptop has been carefully optimized over time and regularly re tuned to match my work flow. It's software environments ideal for software and web development, listing to music, watching videos, and surfing the fine web. So working on Dixie (the laptop) is like a fish swimming through water

Needless to say I love my laptop lool.
