It's government. By definition, you should be worried.

I haven't read too much into it tbh...but from what I can tell it wouldn't solve anything but make people angry.

Perhaps their intentions are good, but this is certainly not the right way to do it.

First time I ever heard of it... probably the last time I will ever hear about it. Which is why I won't bother asking what it is. Wink

Remember, we put them there. This is what they do to us with the sacred trust we place in them. Find non-politicians and vote for them next time. They can't do worse.

To be honest, ive no trust in any politician, no desire to follow anything that is pushed in my face. However with my anger at certain things that are happening here..I wonder if i should stand for Govt, with 1 policy...A real, no BS...No bank balance policy

Looks like they wanna censor whole internet just like in china..

Anyways one of our biggest ISP:s in Finland has been forced to block access to places like piratebay (by government) but i guess it is very little compared to sopa since it there are hundreds of ways to bypass it Biggrin

Anyways hey agent the eestiman Biggrin ..i guess you don't remember me but we both were in SoE over 2 years ago Biggrin

There are many arguments for file sharing. Ill give you 2 very differant scenarios...

1) I am uploading all of the latest games and movies for everyone to download. ( just an example, i dont)

2) I am uploading all of my own DJ mixes and Rvs maps that I Have created for everyone to download.

Its not just as straight forward as the authorities would like to believe and as an ultimate result, I think eventually they will find that its futile trying to censor and control the internet. If they had put the measures into place 30 years ago...maybe it wouldnt have got into the 'free for all' state that it is now.

I guess you can stop worrying now, the internet-wide strike appears to have made a dent...if not we can always stick c2 on a door when they are about to open it... -_-

Given that Google has so far only indexed less than 1% of the internet censoring the internet is utterly utterly futile.

isnt it just...i deliberatly make this site hard to find in search engines..not because its illegal...but because it is semi-private.

I dont like how kids that list links to files are being targeted, but nobody from ANY search engine is even picked up.

From what I have read and heard about it, the politicians that wrote it and support it tell us that it will help better combat online piracy. But what it does is give the government the power to block any domain that they "believe" is encouraging online piracy or otherwise engaged with users that are "suspected" online pirates, as well as to investigate those users.

Basically the biggest argument against it is the fact that the government could censor the internet, which would prevent people from access to information, which was what the internet was invented for. Mostly a 1st amendment issue for the Americans with me, as well as people afraid of being spied on by the government. But they probably do that anyway, right? But SOPA has been shelved due to the public outcry.

What bill we really have to worry about now is PIPA, the PROTECT IP Act, which is in the Senate now and is even more dangerous than SOPA. PIPA would give the government unlimited power to block any foreign domain from American users' access, which is basically what China has right now. It's up to you whether or not you will speak up against it to your Senators.

Of course, any non-Americans don't really have to worry about this, but there is a worldwide version of SOPA/PIPA now being discussed in Europe, called ACTA, which would be a international task force to combat online piracy. Sucks for the Nigerian scammers, eh?

Sorry for the wall of text but this a subject matter that really spiked my interest.

Just read today, that more and more small filehosters panic and restrict their programs due to the shutting down of megaupload.com by FBI (for example: no more bonus-programs for uploaders).

It's a real thin line: massive copyright incidents on the one hand - freedom of internet for users on the other side.

In the case of megaupload.com: For sure there were a lot of illegal things going on. That's a fact! The Problem I see here - as WIZ already mentioned - what happens to my private files I uploaded there and where I have the (copy)-rights on?

Will it be called "bad luck" if I don't have a backup of my files? I'm not sure about the legal situation here.

The legal implications are quite simple...Do you own the work, or has the owner of the work given you direct permission to share it? if neither of the above are true...then its illegal

RIP Megaupload, I think it does suck to take down the site that was one of the first to introduce online data storage: "the cloud". The internet should really not be run by newbs Sad
