A massive boat evacuation took place from lower manhattan island.
To put it into perspective, the evacuation of french and british soldiers from Dunkirk during WWII moved over 300,000 people over the span of 9 days. This evacuation from New York City rescued over 500,000 people in 9 HOURS!
Absolutely amazing stuff.

Looks like they learned a faster way to getem out now than back then and that is for sure a good thing! and It is an awsome thing to do that many more in less time.
To be completely fair...New Jersey and Staten Island are much closer than Dover AND the waters around Manhattan are loaded with boats that are designed to move people across the water quickly in large numbers, every day.
This is not to say it was not a wonderful effort, as was the evacuation from Dunkirk. Good thing it was not taxi drivers doing the rescue or they would have driven around Long Island first and then charged fare and expected a tip.
