Spiral Galaxy M81

"The sharpest image ever taken of the large "grand design" spiral galaxy"

"A spiral-shaped system of stars, dust, and gas clouds, the galaxy's arms wind all the way down into the nucleus. Though the galaxy is located 11.6 million light-years away, the Hubble Space Telescope's view is so sharp that it can resolve individual stars"

This picture came out a few years ago, but i still think its worth the post.

you can download the smaller version which takes seconds. or for those of you who wish to view an extremly large version (trust me its well worth seeing all those stars up close) you can download it on the hubble site, its like 6-700 mb.

small image - http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/publicationjpg/heic0710a.jpg

go here for the larger image http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/html/heic0710a.html

Suddenly i feel so small. and it makes you wonder how some people can think we are the only intelligent life form in the entire universe.

Not the Spiral Galaxy but this is I think the gif animation that helps ram reality home. Smile

I'm really going to miss Hubble when it finally dies. (Not as much as I'll miss Spirit though - that little guy was so tough and robust.)

This Video by American National History Museum is also brilliant. Smile
Watch it in 720p.

(P.s How exactly do you embed the videos around these parts?)

In the .gif image above it says that the VV Cephai is the largest known star but in fact the largest is VY Canis Majoris

Cheers Adelaidian,

This video also had the same mistake but corrected it, and it's also pretty cool. Smile

There is another mistake. The Enterprise D has a maximum velocity of Warp 9.8, that is several hundred c faster than 9.6. Furthermore she left the Milky Way under the influence of an entity known as The Traveler and visited M33.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
