I like this video because it shows the cycle of the M4 when you have it in Transparent view; Feeding, Chambering, Locking, Firing, Unlocking, Extracting, Ejecting, Cocking. Hopefully we go to the Piston instead of Gas operating system soon. There's talk of contracts. I cant wait.

Personally I think the average American solider in the future, will likely ship out to combat with a weapon, his great, great, great, grand father would recognise as a descendent of his space aged "Self cleaning" rifle from Vietnam.

About as "Self cleaning" as a newborn! Colts contract is up and the Army already said they're not buying back in. Enter the Piston operated system. Even if it does look like Great grandpas, Gas-operated will be a thing of the past.

I actually used my M-14 I got issued in Afghan over my M-4A2 anyday. That rifle was refurbed' in the 80s. Still had a wood stock and iron sights. I have seen only one other rifle more reliable. Im still keeping my fingers crossed though. I bet we'll go with the damn most space aged plastic looking POS at the lowest price. Got me there Spidey.

In the film Armageddon, there's a scene when one of the rough necks makes a perfect remark about procurement:

You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?

Scout if you like the M14 and the caliber 7,62x51 (7,62 Nato) than have a look here:

http://www.lwrci.com/p-120-repr.aspx

12", 16.1", 18" and 20" interchangeable upper system, 12" for assault and CQB, 20" barrel for the sniper shoot.

In 5.56 NATO and 6.8mm SPC this is a good alternate, something that combines a M4 with the SAW, closed bolt in semi-auto, open bolt in full-auto:

There is also a video under media about this weapon.

Pretty nice the first one. It looks much like the SASS. I like the interchangeable barrel feature especially. Personally I'd give it to Marksmen but not a Sniper. However it is a Great weapon system that has the capability to fire sub MOAs. But I know for a fact that both will not be very accurate after a short time(Doesn't matter so much for the SAW/Area weapon). Weapon systems with upper and lower receivers(split receivers) usually lose accuracy after firing a few thousand rounds. Its those damn pins that hold 'em together. Thats another reason why Im not a very big fan of the M16 or any other variant of it. The upper receiver begins to "wiggle".
