Okay... so the teamspeak servers...

I completely understand why you have a private server for the SAS teams and approved users.

However, I think it would be beneficial to all involved if you had another "public" sort of teamspeak server for us "regular" folk to use. Many people who come onto the SAS server WANT to use teamwork but you can only communicate so much in game with a keyboard and limited voice commands. If you want people to really learn the ropes, it would help to be able to talk to them.

I just recently got my brother involved in this ([TASF]Overkill if you see him), and he was nice enough to set up a teamspeak server that users connected to during a game the other night. We had 4 people on the teamspeak server, only one of which had access to the SAS private server. There were 8 people in the game, most of them wanted to join the server but didn't have TS and promised to download it at a later date.

So discuss...

What kind of solutions are possible?

By the way, [TASF] is not a formal clan by any means. It's something my brother set up with a bunch of his friends and myself for LAN parties about 12 years ago. He's not recruiting or anything by setting up the TS server we used. The clan doesn't exist, Overkill just always puts the clan name on there for whatever reason. Motorcycle forums, gun forums, whatever, he still uses [TASF] in front of his name.

Show dedication, interest in coop play, ask to be a part of an element, stay regular on the server so we can get to know you, and you might be invited to our TS server and training grounds.

SAS have done it like this for manye years, and we like it.

If you want a public teamspeak server, find one.

some further explanation:

1.: You are right that would help as you described
2.: BUT, we await from our Rcts for example that the are able to communicate with the ingame comms and not via TS...so thats why TS is of course the much better way to communicate but we see it this way: What if the TS server broke down? We await from all members of this clan that then there is no disadvantage at all for us, because everyone must be able to communicate clearly without.

So you see, there is no benefit for us to bring up a public TS, because if someone is interested in becoming a member then he has to learn it anyways and friends are invited to TS. So stick to the advises of SSM_Medic and then TS is just a matter of time.

I think you were a little close minded on your response, Medic. I'm not asking to be invited to the private TS of the SAS clan. I have been playing on the SAS Raven Shield servers for awhile now, and am usually one of the non-SAS members that works with the SAS members in an element.

I'm not asking to be admitted to the SAS TS servers, I was making the point that there is no official communication available for "new" users who want to communicate with each other. I was suggesting that a separate, public TS server could be set up to aid in this.

I see your point, Timbo. It is a good one. But it is very difficult to communicate with new users through text and voice commands in the game. Why handicap people in the game by FORCING them to use the voice commands when they can use a public TS instead?

For example, how do you tell a new person "stack on this side of the door" without doing the real life equivalent of placing your firearm on the ground and writing him a note? That's all I'm saying.

For now, I guess my brother and I will continue to set up our own TS and advertise it to those who want to use it. I have no problem with that, but it doesn't help people when we aren't on the server, does it?

I know you SAS guys (and other regulars on the servers) get sick and tired of trying to type commands to an idiot that WANTS to help the team but just doesn't get it. I see it all the time.

I have exactly that key bind for those situations. I also have "Enemy heard", "I will swing this door -- check your cover", "Deploy flashbang/gas/explosives" and some other useful key binds for communicating with non-SAS players.

Maverick,

I know the reasons are passing you by, but this method is the best method for everyone, not exceptional individuals. There are too many bozos out there. SAS needs to see you can take orders and are willing to learn to use V comms correctly. They need to see self-discipline. When they see that and know you will not talk when u are on TS, then they can risk giving out the PW to potential members. It is not just about the convenience of in-game communication. It is about selection of the best candidates for training and membership. Those are not necessarily the best individual players. I feel your frustration but this has proven to be the best method for the clan over time. Letting someone on too soon can mean EVERYONE having to switch passwords. Even when u have TS, you do not get to talk all that much, lol. If you join, you will be glad for enforced use of V comms. If you learn SAS tactical proceedures you will be able to fill in the blanks. Eventually you can miss the pre-mission briefing and know how to arm and fill in if u join just as the mission is jumping off. All this contributes to progress for those wanting to enter recruit training and join the clan if they pass that.

Bottom line. It is how it's done and other methods have not worked. Patience, study, discipline are all characteristics needed just to get admitted to training. You don't need to understand why. You don't need to like it. You just need to do it. It will pay off.

I hope you do, you and your brother are fun to play with. Stick with the program.

Howdy there Maverick, I would like to add to this, If all would learn their v-comms they could communicate alot better than they do now, I have knowticed that quite a few of them dont know the first thin about them, they are set to do just about all ya need to communicate ingame, there are a few that come in just to raise a stink while gamin by obstructing the attention of others by there anicks, we have a certain use for ts that the genral players may not follow and we have tight rules concernin the way one uses ts and the talk that is used on it, which I have knowticed that several public players dont follow, which we wont tolerate, Like the ssm said, we like to get to know all that are given these extra perks and that they Will use them Correctly, We will not have some foul mouth wild cat on our ts for even a second, We have a set of rules and COH that we follow and alot of them will not maybe cause of their age or just the way they are use to actin on a run and gun server, These things that we have is what makes our servers the best there is.

Your servers are great. It's why I use them. No other server like them that I have found.

I want to be clear, I am not suggesting that you open up the private SAS teamspeak to the public. I'm suggesting that you open a completely separate teamspeak server to the public. Cougar, your reply made it sound like you thought I was only speaking of letting any old fool into the SAS "leet" servers. Not the case.

It's not a technical impossibility, I know Teamspeak can handle it. It just comes down to whether or not you want to make communication EASY between members that know what's going on and those who don't.

The problem of some cursing or spamming idiot coming onto the TS server is a heck of a good point. And I don't know how you'd deal with that. But why scrap the whole idea just because SOMETIMES an idiot will ruin it? When that happens, we can work together, log and ban IP addresses from the TS server, etc. You run that same risk when playing the game, but you keep the servers open to the public because you know that idiots will usually leave when they realize this isn't a run and gun server. And you usually have SAS members there to drop the ban hammer when necessary. TS is no different.

I just think this is an unnecessary barrier for "unproven" users. It will accelerate the learning curve to be able to have audio from users.

As for tactics... I somewhat disagree with tactics used by SAS. I believe we discussed that in game last time, Coug. And I'm always in the proving grounds, so I don't know if the tactics improve in the more advanced servers.

Our servers are maintained for the benefit of our membership. Everyone who joins the Proving Grounds is but a humble guest, and should act accordingly.

People are permitted to play on our public servers so long as they behave by our simple rules and there is free space available. I see no reason why SAS should extend a public teamspeak server as well, it does not benefit us and pubs wanting such tools, can host them themselves quite trivially.

Anyone who can't communicate effectively without TeamSpeak, is unlikely to survive our application process, let along likely to be able to complete the Selection Course. Gaining access to our TeamSpeak, just like our Training Grounds and more advanced tactical training, dictates proving yourself.

That's why the public servers are called the "Proving Grounds".

If the goal of the "Proving Grounds" is to try to find talent that could work in a team element to better SAS, I think you are handicapping yourself by NOT having a better window of communication with new users.

That is a reason to use a separate Teamspeak server that would benefit SAS.

I know I can set up a separate TS server, but accessibility would be hit and miss because my computer isn't always on, and the TS server wouldn't be advertised by SAS on the server.

It really doesn't matter to me either way. I'll still play on the servers and enjoy working as a unit to accomplish the objectives. I just see a little gap that could be filled and wanted to bring it to the attention of you all.

Not everyone comes to play in the Proving Grounds to actually try to become part of SAS. Some of us just want to show up, learn the tactics as quickly as possible to become effective on a team, execute the plans that are laid out, then say "that was fun, goodnight!" at the end of it all and get back to our regular ol' lives. Consider that I speak for that group. There seem to be quite a few of them on the servers.

That was fun, goodnight! Wink

In another thread I recently posted:

"I was trained in individual self-defense tactics and some Ranger/Special Forces tactics...neither of which is the same as what SAS does in RavenShield or SWAT. Once you are no longer working alone or are in team, extreme CQB, right becomes wrong and wrong becomes right. Stay open minded and you will learn a lot about team tactics. I still learn how my training is wrong, in THESE conditions, every month. Have fun."

That does not mean I will take a corner close in IF I AM ALONE AND WITHOUT BODY ARMOR. That is just dumb. I take it wide to take advantage of my superior shooting skills (I hope I'm superior to him, lol) But in an element it makes sense. Sometimes it takes months...then I see just how important it is when a specific situation occurs....then I say, "Oh, yah. They were right." Talking about tactics is a good way to learn, but sometimes experience is the only way to really understand.

Anyway, I'm done. I've offered my friendly opinon. Time will tell. See you on the servers. Good luck.

No offence intended, but I feel that your response indicates that you've missed the point, while [SAS] GCHQ didn't when they set our TeamSpeak guidelines ;).

Teamspak access is one more of the benefits that spurs people to show and prove their skills.

Call it "perks" or something.

Now to have a TS for public players, would also mean that we would have to police it. So that people behaved there.

Long Thread on a Simple Matter.....

SAS Provides TS Servers, Dedicated Gaming Servers and Our Website so we can discuss things like this...hehe
We also 'Police' Our Servers, can you imagine what it would be like to have to 'Police' our Servers AND Our TS?
We play with you many times, get to know you as best we can, and eventually, you May be invited to join Our TS Channel, as we have restrictions: No Children.
So, to provide a TS Server for the Public would be like giving FREE Long-Distance Phone Service to ANYONE!

I like how members are discussing in detail, about our TS server. I thought that voice comms was a priviliage.

Just ponder that for a while.
