There is no such thing as "safe sex".

There is only "safer sex".

The scary fact is that you can catch HIV virus even properly using a functional condom. For some weeks after a person is infected, before the body produces antibodies, the virus can pass through a condom. It is only after the antibodies attach that the condom can prevent the virus from passing through.

The scary fact is that you can catch HIV virus even properly using a functional condom. For some weeks after a person is infected, before the body produces antibodies, the virus can pass through a condom. It is only after the antibodies attach that the condom can prevent the virus from passing through.

You let it sound almost as if it was no difference if you use a condom or not. The fact is that a condom, when used properly, is a highly effective protection wrt the reduction of sexually transmitted diseases.

However it is possible that viruses could pass through condoms, even if they dont have any minor or major holes in it. But the amount of virus able to diffusse through the latex is so small (and you have also to consider about the time factor...) that the risk of infection goes toward zero. The (calculated) hypothetical relative risk of semen exposure (not even infection) when a condom is used (No break, No visibly detectable holes, but still passes virus) is 0.00000004 compared to NO condom use (risk=1.0).

Studies have proven that the use of condoms decreased the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission by approximately 85%. And dont think that the remaining infections are due to viruses diffusing through the latex, but mainly due to other reasons, such as damaged condoms, wrong usage (before, during and after), other body fluids and so on....

I just rechecked on information from 2005 that claimed the antibody-free HIV would be able to escape a latex condom. "The biggest myth is that because HIV is much smaller than the pores of a condom designed to stop seamen. BUT the HIV needs a carrier it can not transfer by itself. This myth has absolutely no medical basis but the lie is being spread by the religious right bend on sexual repression rather than meaningful education.." and also there were companies marketing test kits that claimed the same. So it may be we were both wrong and that NO penetration can occur.

HIV lives INSIDE cells, specifically the T4 cells of the immune system which are found in large volumes in semen and pre-ejac. fluids. These cells do not leak from high quality latex condoms. Because of this, the CURRENT claim is that it doesn't matter if the antibodies are present yet, or not. Still, I remember when the US govt said that AIDS was an "auto-immune disease" caused by anal sex. They were wrong. I now take the safe path until I am sure they are right, the information from 2005 being contested now is a great example.

***

"safe sex" is an illusion. The professional term is "safer sex", for many reasons. I said "can", not "will". Sex can be made safer by engaging in non-penetrative sex or by consistently and correctly using a male and/or female condom every time. By the way, there are counterfeit condoms being sold now that will NOT protect you. They are not properly made. Guess where a lot of them come from....the PRC. The source of antifreeze vitamins for children and dangerous drywall.

In 2005 there was a 1 in 300 chance that any random person was HIV+ and that chance increased if the person had more partners. Knowing your partners level of sexual activity is instructive. Surprisingly, some elements of the Sex Worker population (like Nevada brothels) had a lower than average incidence of HIV+ because they ALWAYS use protection.

Seroconversion refers to the development of antibodies to HIV and usually takes place between 6 weeks and 3 months after an infection has occurred. Most people develop antibodies within 2 - 8 wks., and 97% within 3 months. Flu-like symptoms often occur when seroconversion takes place. I do not know whether there is less chance of becoming infected by a pre-antibody, infected person. Testing can detect the presence of HIV 3+ weeks after infection. This is why using a condom is considered "Safer Sex", but not "Safe Sex". However, only you can decide if you want to play this sexual version of Russian Roulette. If you do, check their "chambers" for "bullets"

http://www.bunditestkits.com/products/products-details.php?id_prod=1

The point is, there is only "safer sex". "Safe sex" is a myth.

Thanks for the comment, ESCRT, prompting me to recheck for current data.

Actually the viral load is at its peak shortly (about 1 week) after infection. That means that the risk of transmitting HIV to other persons is very high at this early times.

Then, as you correctly mentioned, the immune system takes over and responds with a massive production of anti-HIV-antibodies. HIV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells, and specific antibody-producing cells control the HI virus in the body, and the viral titers will decrease to a very low level.

Unfortunately HIV infection finally leads to a loss of CD4+ cells, which means that the immune response decreases and the viral loads start to increase again.

STAY SAFE!!!
