Re: RFC: USB or PCI Wifi

The big problem is how the heck to cram this PC into the room and still have a place to use my laptop w/o sitting in bed, and buying a new (larger) desk ain't cheap lol...

But some wood, hammer and nails are cheap. Build your own table!

And whats the problem with using your laptop in bed. Unless your using it for something else giggity.

I'd go with the PCI card. Don't get me wrong, I love USB devices, but theres one tiny flaw. Usually called the washing machine. Or maybe the bottom of my foot when I'm trying to get to the door from my bed. I have no room to move laterally when I go from my bed to my door.

Well a Chihuahua named Willow, half blocked cooling fan/vents, and an aching back and neck from (n*7)*365 where 'n' is many hours each night are the big problems with using a laptop in bed Wink

I ripped apart a cubby and a bookshelf to build a rudimentary pedestal desk just so I could put the laptop on it and sit at a chair. My laptops like a work station, 85% of my coding and work on the site gets done from it. And if I could have afforded wood at the time, I would've done a better job lol.

There is a large work area but it can't support the weight of my 19" CRT monitor... The cost of an LCD and a desk are questionable trade offs :\. The desk I have my desktop on, doesn't have enough room for both the monitor and the laptop even if I played switch'a'roo with the monitor, keyboard, and laptop between desktop & laptop.

One thing I like about the PCI card is it is well supported for a long time by my operating system of choice Wink

Im on D-Link PCI Wifi, with 6 meters distance and 1 plaster wall.
It`s okey for surfing on the web and downloading, but when it comes to gaming.. No chance in He**

Don't forget there is a Router involved too. The Router could be the weakest link.
Unless you have the same Router as me; D-Link Extreme N Wireless Gigabit Router Wink

My router is a low end VxWorks based make of WRT54G from Linksys with a broadcom chipset for the wifi. My fist Pentium PC was more powerful...

So far, I've encountered D-Link and Linksys routers with little good to say about them. Netgear, my PCMCIA card works like a charm at least lol.

How does the router work for you Valroe?

I've been sceptical about D-Link myself earlier, but the D-Link DIR-655 is impressive. I bought it after reading reviews. It's very stable and very fast... extremely fast actually. I can't feel the difference between wireless and wired.

Not very good lol. I get lots of lag ingame.
