Swat4 and RvS on Newer PC's

I'll post a more complete guide up in the next couple weeks but I have spent a shit ton of time getting both RvS and Swat4:TSS to run on my newer laptop and fiqured I should let you know its possible.

The solution is simple, that nice gfx card you got to make things run smooter and that fancy multi core processor you bought to make everything run faster, completly skip them.

You'll end up running and rendering the entire game on 1 of your CPU's cores and assuming its not working becuase your computer is "too" good it should run just fine like this.

1. Get the Gfx processing off the Gfx card and onto the CPU.

2. Now getting the game to run on 1 core:

Now play your games!

Hey Noah,

sry to say that but somewhere I posted that month ago ;O)
So that would have saved you a lot of time.....

But I think Spidey knows where it stands hehehe

But I am quite curious that you really have to go back to one core.

What are the specifics of your Laptop. I bet you have a GeForce8xxx grafics card...

Would be interesting, because Swat just doesnt run on my Laptop properly...Ravenshield does with TL=false

Thats why I am using my old PC for playing those games. Dont you have problems with Swat and kind od "lagging" also in solo-mode?

For both RvS and S4:TSS I had to disable Hardware T&L but my tests (on a GF8400) showed that Vertex Shading or w/e HardwareVS stands for didn't need to be turned off (as timbo had instructed in his post).

I've also run Raven Shield and SWAT4+SWAT4:TSS on a dual core EM64T chip *without* changing any thing under Windows NT 5.1 (XP), and have had no problems beyond those I had back on a single core P4 in my original game machine lol.

I also find it rather sad that both games only use the Direct X side of Unreal Engine Sad

There's several other thread related to this matter, but this one seems the most appropriate one to respond to... so here are my findings.

On multiprocessors:
- install the cpu driver if applicable; then install the dual core optimizer if applicable
- keep your o/s updated Smile - iirc xp sp3 includes the optimizer...
- if you can't do the above, you can use a tool (like imagecfg) to set the uniprocessor bit on an executable's header (confirmed working with pb)
- iirc setting the affinity after the game has launched did not help, at least from personal experience

On g80+:
- from searching around, it seems the problem with tnl, etc. was confirmed by nvidia due to the shaders being originally designed for dx10
- problem mostly seen by old unreal 2.x based games (i.e. ut2k4, rvs, etc.) ( and older?)
- using software processing is fine if you have a fast processor or use a smaller resolution, etc - used to use this on the release of rvs beta/demos on video cards that didn't have tnl...
- you can disable certain things that use tnl, such as 1st person weapon view (old school r6 style, though the 1.60 rets have an offset...)
- vista drivers are fine

So yeah, I recently got one of these myself (theyre getting really affordable...)

Update: the 177 driver actually delivers.

Details: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=69481

Apparently they were from the Asus site (now gone) and the inf changed so that all device id's should be recognized I guess. This is an unofficial hacked around non-whql'd pre-release package. So, with the usual warnings, try this at your own risk ;p

I just tried a bunch of games and they all seem to work smoothly... including the ue 2.x based games: s4x, rvs, aa. I still have some problems with other software but this is great news. I can also stick with xp (32) too.

Luckily I only had to wait a month for this, unlike some who were waiting 2? years...

EDIT: oh cool, r v s (without spaces) autoexpands to RavenShield - I wonder if there's a recognized short form for s4x.

You would be surprised what you can do with Forum Software Grish hehe.

I'll try the drivers when they are officially released from nVidia.

fwiw, 177.26 still huge performance problems but at least it allowed games to be playable. I was testing 177.39 and everything seems to be fixed in terms of performance and smoothness in these games [spoke too soon, s4 is having problems - fixed after a reboot]. Did not test 177.35, but it seems 177.40 is out now - might be useful for those like me who want to test the latest due to other problems related to graphics.

Spidey, there's a 175.19 WHQL release btw. Looks like a backport might've been done for this update. Haven't tried it yet though.

Improved 3D performance and load times for GeForce 8 and 9 series GPUs in some DirectX 9 and OpenGL applications as a result an improved shader optimizer.
