One time at a convention, several of us were returning to our rooms and bear in mind we are not small people. We got on and the buzzer sounded but the doors closed anyway so we said, "What the hell."

We got something like 2 floors up and the elevator stopped. We all started laughing and since several of us had cell phones, we all called the front desk of the hotel to alert them to our presence and to have them divert someone from maintenance to our location.

The answer we got was somewhat unexpected. "There is no maintenance person on site, but we have placed a call. We expect to see him in about an hour to an hour and a half."

As word spread through the elevator car, we were no longer laughing and we were trying to figure out exactly WHO the hell had said "WHAT the hell" first.

We had all consumed massive quantities of various adult beverages and our neither our bladders nor our minds were in optimal condition.

Two of us had some experience with elevators in the past. The roof access hatch looked rather small and had some kind of upholstery secured around it. Not very safe in an emergency but we decided against it because not all of us could get out that way, not to mention the fact that we didn't want to damage the car and have someone look into the incident of destruction of property while were were somewhat under the influence.

Myself and a friend named Dave pried open the inner doors to the elevator to expose the outer doors. On the panel in front of us was a lever and arm assembly. We released the safety catch, turned the lever and pried those doors apart to discover that we had almost cleared the 3rd floor opening. There was just enough room for us to slide out and drop.

We were all laughing again as we returned to our rooms to finish our drinks extremely satisfied with ourselves. FYI--we decided on taking the stairs to our rooms.

In the morning, the elevators were all functioning properly. I have no idea what the reaction was by the maintenance man upon approaching the empty, stranded car. I imagine it was a head scratcher for him.
