The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has developed a standard marking SOP for use during urban combat. It uses a combination of colors, shapes, and symbols. These markings can be fabricated from any material available. (Figure I-2 shows examples.)
I always wondered why we dropped a green light stick lol. I think back in SWAT3 there was even a mod to make them blue haha.
Hmm.... I don't get the directions beside the symbols but those don't matter do they?

Depends if you ever wind up in a warzone full of NATO forces and don't want to get tapped by accident
Nitrix,
Unlike the simulation, during a RL entry and clearing sweep/search doors are marked to indicate the status of the room behind to those coming afterward. This helps ensure no rooms are missed behind the advancing team(s). Firemen may use a similar technique in large buildings.
Actually, there is no reason the game could not include this as some other FPS let you "grafitti".

One thing you should keep in mind though, is that you can't say any room is 100% clear, until you are in it. Even if you have already cleared it once, you never know if a tango has walked in there after you have cleared it. It doesn't happen often, but you have to be prepared for when it does.
agreed there
