dual core, GeForce 8600+ AND Ravenshield = problem

Hey all,

after I installed my new laptop I had a lot of problems with Ravenshield.
First it doesnt even start correctly. Stops at the intro with a flickering monitor and then totally freezes. I found out that there is a patch from Microsoft to fix such problems with dualcore. I talked with Spidey about that yesterday and I think this patch is what Spidey put in the ARMOURY.

Now my game runs but it was kind of laggy although I played solo mode. So it just doesnt run smooth and I felt like having lags (whats not possible cause I played offline) After searching a long time and testing I finally found the solution:

1. Install the patch from Microsoft
2. Go to your ravenshield. ini (ravenshield/system) and change the following settings:

UseHardwareTL=False
UseHardwareVS=True
MaxPixelShaderVersion=1

After I did that, everything runs smooth and properly and with setting your MaxPixelShaderVersion=1, you avoid having problems with Ground-textures if there is an area under it (like on the map training)

Hopefully this helps some guys who will/has already problems with a new power-pc Wink

Thx
Timbo

EDIT:
sorry WIZ, thought spidey added it after I told him yesterday ;O)

Yeh thanks Spidey for adding the new downloads section :roll:

It sounds to me like you have the classic 'Rvs vs Dc' problem. the files im adding in there, will fix this for anyone..without having to tweak your game files.

ok, after I had a talk with WIZ and searching in the internet for an optimizer for INTEL, I read that the amd-optimizer also works for intel.
I tried it (the one WIZ put in the armoury) and without changing my ini-file the game just runs fine!
So:
1. install windows patch
2. install amd-optimizer (even if you have intel)

3. it works

thx

Disabling hardware T&L probably would put more push on the software or degrade the graphics (if not both).

When I first tried to play RvS, I couldn't because our 32MB ATI 128 Ultra Rage AGP4X didn't support the necessary Transform and Lighting (T&L) features lol

Had the same problem and realiced it was because of dual core so I just limited the game to use only one core, worked great Smile

WinLauncherXP is the name of the program I used Smile

That works, but it isnt the best way to do it. by turning it to 1 core, you are upsetting the balance of threads. Because a dual core machine, multi-tasks in threads, and not actual programs.
And as we all know, 1 program is made up of thousands of threads.

If you still want to go that way, you dont need a seperate program. Windows task manager allows you to control affinities of upto 99 processors.

At my pc it hadnt really worked.
The only thing that really worked fine with RvS (NOT Swat) was:

UseHardwareTL=False
UseHardwareVS=True
MaxPixelShaderVersion=1

...like I wrote in the upper post.

With this it ran very smooth and nice.

But now I use my old one again and everythings fine ;O)

Im about to change to Vista. Is that compatible with RVS at all?

Spidey01

RvS should work with Vista fine; Microsoft's business depends on backward compatibility.

Heck just open cmd.exe and run the 'edit' programme in Windows XP....

For the majority of games you must set the affinity _before_ you launch it or else it will be out of sync. The iffy handling of threads over multiple cores makes the restriction to 1 core an easy alternative. However, with today's drivers/updates/etc I haven't found the need to use it lately.

I read in a magazine today that with Vista you can dedicate a processor to run on a spesific program when dual processros make trouble.

It's in norwegian, but I'll send the text to someone who knows computer english for translation.

In Vista the start command gained an affinity switch, e.g. start /affinity [cpu#] prog.exe.

This program might do the job but I doubt any of it will do much better then just setting the affinity through the task manager. Although I wouldn't put it past the Win32 API to have some way for a program to play around hehe.

I just got my new gaming rig, and I bought geoforce 6800 and therefore I had a problem at my hand.
Tnx to Rasa, who walked me trough how to fix this, it works now perfectly.

1. installed amd fix file
2. installed windows fix file
3. rewrite RVS ini. File

More stable...stronger reliability...the choice of men.

Seriously, Intel are only popular because they have a stronger marketing department.

I might have jumped the gun here.
Today I crashed 5-6 times in both winter maps. Everytime I tryed to enter the ladder to go down the rabbit hole, I crashed.

First i thought i might be Xfire, but it still crashed after Xfire was off.
The funny part is that it seems like I can play som maps without any problems.

error message:
os: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
CPU: AuthenticAMD Unknown processor @ 3003 MHz with 2047MB RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS (6921)

Yesterday ewerything worked perfectly, but then again, we only played Import export map.

My rig:
1 Logitech G11 gaming tastatur USB, Svensk Layout

I have not changed settings at my Graphic card after installing latest driver, runs on defoult settings.
Run RVS at highest settings both on graphics and sound.

well, some testing and failuring and hours of irritation......
Started with low and no settings i graphics menu in RVS. Everything workded fine.
And as I vent along, I graduatly eleminated problems by setting higher settings, started at the top, working my way down in the graphic settings in RVS.

I found out that its the decal detail that couses the trouble.
All other settings are at high, and everything works fine Biggrin

So, finaly I can play those maps that wouldn work. At least in single player mode. But guess it will work in mutiple player as well.
I just gotta settle witn showing no bullet impact or explotions.
But thenagain, Xfire works, thats a Jippi!

Funny, it was only Alpine village, and mountain highway that did not work prop.

Tnx to everyone that has tryed to help me.

Oh and for the record, I have Intel, and RVS has worked perfectly since day 1 Biggrin

And not to mention how hot that AMD processor gets. AMD was a good gaming processor 3 years ago, but Intel has taken over.
It`s a bit more expensive but hey.. its better. You wont find a more reliable processor.

Spidey... XP has affinity control too, even NT does

It's true that right now Intel has the performance crown... so my choices are based on price. Not many get bleeding edge stuff anyways, and both lineups have their own share of bugs and hot processors. One advantage of a PC is the flexibility in upgrading, and so many will stick to their previous platform.

XP is NT, and Spidey was referring to the start command.

I had alsways AMD, but right now I have INTEL because they are better in the moment.
