At least I can say:

If my Graphic-card continues making trouble, I am going to toast it Exclaim Twisted

DUKE, Germany

well it depends on what applications you will require it for.

Obviously 768mb is more than 2x512mb. I see the angle that you are thinking on this though..dual core..spread the work etc etc.

some cards are better at video processing than graphics processing. By that i mean..films or games.

My advice, as there are so many cards out there, is to google some review sites, many have benchmarking tests.
One question from me though..are you intending to build an SLi system?

I have no idea. I'm just in the stage of checking out some prices.

Check http://www.tweaksrus.com. They are pretty good at giving answers to such questions.

Well, it'd just be for gaming.

Hmm, hard one. 8800 GTX has not only more memory, but also 3 times more Texture Fill Rate, 3 times more Memory Bandwidth, and 3 times larger Memory Interface (bits) than one 8600 GTS card.
But 8600 GTS has a little faster Memory Clock, Shader Clock and Core Clock, and with 2x 8600 GTS in Scalable Link Interface that would be fast.

So, I have no idea actually what would be the fastest. Myself I wouldn't bother with the dual 8600 cards. I would just get the 8800 GTX.

Specifications:

Geforce 8800 GTX
Stream Processors: 128
Core Clock (MHz): 575
Shader Clock (MHz): 1350
Memory Clock (MHz): 900
Memory Amount: 768MB
Memory Interface: 384-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec): 86.4
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec): 36.8

Geforce 8600 GTS
Stream Processors: 32
Core Clock (MHz): 675
Shader Clock (MHz): 1450
Memory Clock (MHz): 1000
Memory Amount: 256MB
Memory Interface: 128-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec): 32
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec): 10.8

Most definitely the 8800GTX.

Not to mention that SLI doesn't scale as nicely as it sounds... and all the headaches and restrictions that come with it.

I would probably choose the dual 8600's for top-performance but,

I'd go with the 8800 for simplicity of installation and configuration Smile

Afaik the GTX will single-handedly beat those 8600's in sli. You'd want to look at sli configurations for 8800's, though I hear they can be costly in some areas.

Looking at the HD3870's in crossfire might be of interest - and cheaper, though I'm not sure if you're just looking at nvidia's side.
