Wow. Lucky he didn't get seriously injured. If the target was a metal plate they should've angled it downwards.
Heh, listen to the guy at the end: "We're not doing that anymore". Smile

Hmm.... Maybe there's a reason besides the explosives why they shoot targets DOWN range with the .50Cal when doing the explosive ordnance disposal thing.

I have never had the distinct pleasure of firing a 50 cal rifle like the one shown in this clip. I have however fired several high powered, large calibre sniper rifles. That particular rifle has tremendous kinetic energy in the round it fires. Those 50 cal rounds are designed to puncture LAV armour, to go through engine blocks with minimal effort.

I find it highly unlikely that a bunch of clowns like those guys, found a target that was so hard that a 50 cal round would not penetrate it. Having fired large calibre rifles at close proximity ( which these idiots clearly did ) I believe that a plausible explanation is blowback from the target fragments. The 50 cal round may have penetrated the target with such force that it sent a projectile flying back down the path of entry.

I have shot several hardened targets at close range and depending upon the kinetic energy at the point of impact, the round actually penetrates then releases that energy causing a miniture explosion within the target that sends pieces of the target flying back down the path of entry.

We are not talking about a BB gun here, this weapon is designed to penetrate, plain and simple. Remember your science class lessons, if a round of that size, traveling as fast as it does, with as much energy as it does, were to hit a unpenetratable surfice, it will either destroy itself completely or rebound, back out with similar force that it entered with. (Want to test that, get a BB gun and shoot a flat steel plate up close and just watch)

Given how close that idiot was to his target, a rebounding 50 cal round would have had alot more energy, even after hitting the ground and bouncing up, to have done more to that dummy then knock his ear pods off.

I vote for flying target fragments... but never having actually fired that particular rifle... can't say for sure. Only one thing is undebateable....

That guy doesn't need to buy lottery tickets anymore.... he just had his win !

Ahh yess, ballistics are always an intresting tiopic of conversation. Ohh yes. In the course I recently completed, Part of the curriculum was ballistics. In an earlier poll spidey put out, i chose the .45 for its "knockdown power". Well, as I recenly found out, there is no such thing. When a person falls from a gunshot wound(the knockdown power), it is not from the force or size or speed of the round at all. It is a human, psychological reaction. Its really interesting. Take from this what you will Smile

Use big enough a cannon and the enemy will be more inclined to surrender and go home?
