"We never covered ourselves with glory today."

"When I have your wounded."

Major Charles "Madman" Kelly was the Commander of the 57th Medical Detachment during Vietnam. I remember when I was watching a thing on Dustoff pilots a few years back. It talked about how it got so bad, the Helicopter pilots were putting in so many hours. Those in charge wanted to ground them for a rest cycle after so many hours in the air for safety. With so many missions, not a lot of people listened to a word of it I'd reckon, because they kept flying the missions.

Through the fires of hell, the brave crews would fly. Just as they we're trained and lead, from US Soldiers to the enemies wounded. In the end, Charles Kelly died when a Snipers bullet penetrated the cockpit of his Huey during a mission. The troops on the ground urged him to liftoff but stubborn as ever, he would not leave without evacuating the wounded. No desk job beyond the lines of fire for him. He would be out in the field with the rest of his unit, till it finally caught up with him.

I have great respect for the skills of any one that can fly a Helo, because I know its not as easy to keep the air. A plane is easy enough but a Helicopter in combat takes balls. Is there any better use of a life in a war where life expectancy is measured in weeks? Many dustoff pilots died or became casualties themselves but the saved an enormous amount of lives that would have died without a few Guardian Angles in the sky.

Its been a long time since I've studied the Vietnam war, but I remember the quote. "When I have your wounded" and think about the Dedication those pilots must've had.
