Virginia Tech shooting

The second biggest tragedy in today's shooting was the lack of a hero among all the people involved, considering the number of victims and time elapse.

Sad

Yea, Lazko, I remember that too. As well as Columbine, Jonesboro, and all the others. What I will remember most from this one is the image of two police officers hiding behind a tree while the shooting is going on inside. I'm sorry, but that just does not compute! Now, I know the value of discipline, as a former [SAS] member, and a veteran, but at some point, if the leader, or commander on site does not respond, then F**k him, it's time to take the situation in hand. Did these officers really think there was a hostage situation, when 27 gunshots ring out before they move? Whatever happened to personal initiative? I have always been a team player, but I also have always had a leader! Lately, in real life situations, there has been a very noticeable lack of them! My prayers for the victim's families.

I read it today in the newspaper as well. The news of what has happened have struck Germany as well. And it is indeed very disturbing to see nobody took action as Duct says.
My prayers are with the Families.

I wonder if anybody outside of Germany witnessed a similar incident in Erfurth, Germany. But for this incident games like Counter Strike were blamed at least in some points. The guy who shot around himself used a pumpgun to shoot 13 teachers, 2 students and himself.

at least we can be thankfull that in 99% of these cases, the gunman does actually save one for himself...If it was in the UK we would stop him doing that, arrest him, then let him off with a slap on the wrist...if the judge is in a BAD mood.

What a tragedy...

Wiz, in Norway they would give the shooter a lollipop, a tap on the shoulder, asked him if he felt better and let him straight out on the street again.
I dont believe in execution though.

It is very sad what had happened.

Just a few days ago, I read a life-report from a girl who was inside such a building, explaining really detailed the horror of death right before the eyes.

You hear those things in the news (televesion, Internet, newspaper)...
...but I'm sure no one can realise what it means to be direct in this hell.

And the one comment "there should have been a hero" is easy said: Which (unarmed) civilian would really dare to engage such a person, which is wild-firing on everything that moves? The fact is: No one wanna be a dead hero in such a situation! Think about it.

Who is to blame?

Is it the social-problem, because the society is getting colder - meaning most are going on their own and don't care for others?

Is it a rassictic-problem, cause this boy was an outsider - probably of his nationalty?

Is it the law - concerning the free and easy to get weaponry to everyone - making such things more possible to happen?

By the way: The President suggested that everyone - also in school - should be armed for protection. Can you imagine what may happen, when hundreds of teenagers are armed - just for selfprotection? We better don't think about it...

Rest in peace.

A low power Taser might not be bad.

But then you'd have people being execuited =/

I saw all about what happened. Its a true shame, my heart goes out to all involved. The shooter was deeply disturbed...its too bad he couldn't have been helped before this happened Beee

Also, there were some heroes who did what they could, ie a Holocaust survivor blocked a door while kids climbed out a window, and then let the shooter by and he was killed. But I understand how you feel. If I was a police officer and I heard the gunshots I would have gone it, it would have really gone against my better values to not.

Thanks for all the excellent responses to this post. Well thought out, and heartfelt. At the time of my post, the disclosure of the "heroes" had not been made. Turns out there were heroes, and I salute them. I can understand that no one wants to sacrifice his life, but I believe the main reason the gunman was not "rushed" by the victims is that we have all become programmed to "wait for the authorities", which of course never occurred. The responsibility for protection of our lives, in the final analysis, is ours alone, and always has been.

One last comment. In all the American news coverage, I never once saw, or heard the word "murdered" in the dialogue! The students "died", were "killed",
"massacred", "executed", etc. But not murdered!

They were MURDERED! Nothing else.

Sad

I would like to pay tribute to the professor who saved the lives of his student and VA tech. also to those who lost their lives at such a young age. Just because of the actions of 1 individual who went south.....It shouldnt be about blame but to remember those who lost their lives

Sad Say day for america Sad

What sucks is this is going to be on the News all week. They should let them deal with it in their own way. Without having to watch the same old footage day in and day out.

All week on the American news nets at least.

Crazy, just plain crazy. Very terrible for those who have lost.

Something must be completely wrong in the society, when people can be drawn to doing something so cruel.

It was a huge mistake letting him buy those guns. I've seen some pictures on a news page, of the maniac holding a Glock 19 and a Walther P22. And he used JHP bullets too.

It would've been very difficult for a "hero" to take him down by hands, since he used 2 guns.

Yeah it is incredibly sad that sort of thing happens...it is crazy that 32 people woke up that morning not knowing it was their last...

and there has been a lot of speculation here in America, that Professor's should be allowed to be strapped with pistols for safety reasons....but that in itself could lead to more controversy and the problem can never be solved really...unless the US decides to change the Constitution and not allot Americans civs to bear arms, other than Law Enforcement and Military

1/ Banning guns in the US will never work..your society has too many in circulation
2/ closing the Uni sounds the simple solution, in reality 100 buildings and 25000 students to evacuate..simply isnt.

Airport style detection on entry, would reduce the chance of this happening, but im sorry to say that you will never stop the hardcore maniac. It is a sad part of life that we have to come to terms with.

IMHO, you don't really need much for 'deadly weapons'. If people were restricted from selling any thing more automatic then a Bolt-Action rifle things might be better but as Wiz says to many Autos in circulation. Although there is nothing to stop people from cutting back on the Ammo over the next 10 years and not selling them more Wink

And if the avg guy with a cracked crock couldn't hit the broad side of a ban without a Semi-Auto, hehehe all the better.

I'm a person. That I'd l ove to own some serious hardware and learn to use it too. In fact I'm a tad annoyed about the Civilian model of the MP5 and ammunition resrictions Sad

Just as much as I'd love have a chance for my 'dream arsenal', USP, MK23, AR-15, MP5, and Kar98K Wink

I don't see why we _need_ such things any more. When the constitution was written, you needed a weapon just to eat in many parts of the US. Now, lol its sport and defense. And I think a Glock 19 and 10 round mag would be plenty for home defense. ( > 10 round pistol mags != legal in the US afaik)
