Recon's pc burned out.

My PC have been very hot lately probaly because of the weather outside, but today it suddenly crashed and I have not been able to boot it for about 4 hours now.

I'm typing this from my mates very old PC so if I don't get the PC to work I will not be able to play any games for some weeks, then I'll have to go hunting for a new PC and I don't really have the cash for one ATM.

I hope I'll be able to boot it otherwise you then know why I'm not around.
I'll keep you updated.

Anyways any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

sounds like you might need a new processor, not a new PC.

Didn't you just buy a new PC less then a year ago or some thing?

Whats the temp there?

No my PC is about 3 or 4 years old, but your right I talked about getting one a few month back but unfortunately I never did it and ATM I dont have all the money it takes to get a really good one.

Plus there is long delivery on the PC I have been looking at.

well in 99% of cases, its unlikely that the whole PC is duff. post your specifications and temps we will try and help.

Intel Pentium 4 2,4 Ghz.
533 Mhz Systembus
512 KB Level2 cache
512MB DDR RAM
120 GB Storage
ATI Radeon 9200 256MB
Windows XP Home edition

The "box" is very compact so it gets really hot easely, but I have never exsprienced it so hot as it has been lately.

well if it is the CPU u can pick up a 3.06Ghz P4 for around £50. Maybe invest in a bigger heatsink and fan at the same time. But that is, if its the cpu.

It is very unlikely to be the CPU.

The likely culprits are either the power supply (PSU) or the hard drive.

It will help if you describe exactly what happens when you power on the system. Do the fans and stuff start as normal? Do you ever reach the Windows loading screen? What is the last message you see? Do you hear any strange noises coming from the hard drive?

I'm with James on this one. I gather that by "compact" you mean a shuttle model?

It's indeed those parts that heat up the most, and I've had to replace my power unit before too

Well Recon that is still very ambiguous.

If you can't even get the fans to start, like really no action at all from it, then your problem is the PSU and you will need to fit a new one.

But even if its the PSU the fans can still work, depends on what feed took a dive.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but what is the PSU is that the processor?

Power supply unit = PSU. It's the big box, usually at the back of your computer, with lots of red yellow and black cables coming out of it. It's also where you plug it into the mains on the outside.

Not the processor.

It's also that box with the power cord plugged into it through the back of the PC. I've seen good enough PSU's around for $35-$50, or about 206-294 Kroner?

If you have another PC handy then one thing you can do to check whether it is the PSU that is faulty, is to "borrow" the working PSU from another computer and try it in your broken one. If that makes your comp work then you know it is the PSU that is broken.

Thanks for your input guys, much appreciated.

However I have decided to get a new one now, but I'll still use this info to repair it some other time.
