New jet fighter

Norway is looking for a new jet fighter, with the capabilities to defend souvereignity in the vast ocean areas from north of Denmark, east of Scotland, Iceland, north of Spitzbergen to Russia.

Four planes are competing in the final rounds:

** Eurofighter Typhoon (European consortium)
** Dassault Rafale (French)
** JSF F-35 (US)
** JAS 39 Gripen (Swedish)

See a promo video of the JSF here: http://www.dagbladet.no/nyheter/2006/05/30/467618.html

The RNoAF is investing into planes, and the navy has invested in new combat fregates (the first one on its way from the Spanish wharf as I type), stealth mine sweepers and stealth missile torpedo boats.

So... Where is my new G36?

i dont know a lot about the other 2, but i saw a program on the JSF the other night on tv. I was quite impressed. Also the UK has just recently got its first active squadron of Eurofighters.

I don't think the JSF is going into full production. The US government has been concerned about how very expensive they are.

If that Eurofighter Typhoon is the plane I think it is, they should get it, closest thing to a F-22 ya gonna get for avionics / manuvability.

I don't care much for the F-35, but it's a useful aircraft for it's purposes.

For a navy based role prolly the F-35.

the F35 has multiple contruction formats, i like the look of it. It can be made for carriers, heli-carriers, and land based. With some minor alterations.
U wouldnt argue with it in a Cessna put it that way.

Expensive

As far as the price tag is concerned, our boys at the Air Force will spare no expense for highest-technology equipment, but they will think twice about the training required to fly it before handing the keys to a pilot.

At 125 million dollars each, the F-22 is not what I would call a bargain, but from the tests I have seen, you certainly get what you pay for. Can't speak in terms of the F-35 because I haven't seen one.

The EuroFighter should be extremely maneuverable from what I have heard, and is probably the best one right now in "dogfights". The F-22 Raptor is also very good but the airplane also has the advantage that it can’t be easily detected by radar.

The F-35 is still under development and they hope for a 2010 production date. The JSF development program is going to cost $250 billion. After that, you then have to spend billions more buying the planes. $125 million easy for one fighter jet. Then you need to spend few million a slice on maintanence. Million to train a Pilot, Billions for supporting satelite astronomical equipment, last a Million to arm the planes with missiles and bombs. What a great $business$

And people wonder why we (the United States) have a national deficit numbering in the HUNDREDS of BILLIONS of dollars, though part of that may be my fault, with all the shooting I do Wink . Ah the price of protecting and serving.

Only a million bucks for weapons? What are we putting on those JSF's a water boy with a squirt gun?

One AMRAAM missile costs at least $386,000 a pop.

Any jet truly capabile of BVR should at least be able to pack an AIM-54 Phoenix which is near or over 3 Million just to give an F-14 Tom Cat a full load of those babies. And she can still burn your six in a Dog Fight to boot!.

What chance of any missle hitting an evasive pilot at range aside. Comparing an AIM-120 to an AIM-54 is like comparing an M4 to the M16. The US Navy F-14 is one of only two aircraft I know in the whole world that can carry this 184+ KM range missle into battle. AMRAAM range is 75-110 KM depending on model.

The fact that I'm predudice agasnt other aircraft besides the F-14 is also aside the point ^_^

Weapons

True that one million wouldnt begin to cover expenses at all. In my mind however there is nothing more effective or dangerous than a trained infantryman with an M16. One M16 costs just under 800 dollars and the ammunition for that weapon is relatively cheap nowadays. As spidey said, one AMRAAM missile = 386 grand. If you want an accurate loadout for today's War In Iraq:

Loadout for one F/A-18 Hornet. (Plane Cost- 32,000,000 USD)
One M-61A1 20 millimeter cannon + 520 rounds = 800,250
2 AIM-9 Sidewinder- 83,000 x 2
1 AIM-7F Sparrow- 720,000
2 AIM-120 AMRAAM- 386,000 x 2
2 AGM-65E Maverick- 180,000 x 2
2 Mk82 500-lb Bombs- 268.50 x 2

GRAND TOTAL (not including fuel, mainteance, training)
34,818,787 USD

Wow I need to check my tax forms again :ohwell:

The Norwegian air force ode to by the JAS 39 Gripen (Swedish) it is an advers. all-round fighter aircraft with possibilities within both air to air combat and excellent air to ground support capabilities and a very light maintaining cost compared to any US-fighter plains . The Eurofighter is 80/20 pct in air to air and ground capabilities. The French aircraft is Howe to put it just French (a supper weapon like the FAMAS).

I know that a project group in the Danish air force has recommended, that we do not bye the JSF F-35 (US) because of the expected huge maintains cost.

Why do Norway need an air force???? why not just plaster the (fjeldene/mountains) with anti aircraft guns and missiles and all other nasty weaponry.

When did the military mount an m240 and a .50 cal on the hornet?

And the ammo for the vulcan is in there, its only 250 bucks.

Anything else Mr. Accountant Man? Wink

I Miss read M-61A1 as M1A1 lol, I am sleepy.

I'm glad their not going /w the JSF.

We have a tendancy for weapons that cost big bucks, kicks buttocks, and takes lots of training to use.

Compare that to an AK-47, I hear you can practicly put it together wrong and still fire it, assuming you don't blow your toe off from the loss in accuacy Biggrin

I have seen some of the hardware going into the JSF during an Internship. Those things are CRAZY, The company I interned for is replacing all the pyrotecnic launchers on the JSF with pneumatic weapons ejection systems.
