The axle would stick out about 3 or 4 foot, just a metal rod about 1 1/2" thick.
Was going down a highway hitting almost 65, in a 79 Jeep Wagoner.
All of a sudden, the left rear drops, felt like the front end raised, looked out my window, the tire rolled on by me with a 3 or 4 foot piece of pipe attached. Then started concentrating on the road. Gashed the road for a good fifty yards. Just happened to be scraping by the only store for 60 miles either way, picked what was left of the brakes and what-not, then asked at the store if anyone seen where the tire landed. Indian Reservation, they thought it was very funny, pointed it to me, I rounded it up, threw everything into the back, walked back to the Teachers Housing there.
Thats how I know there was no axle attached to those wheels.

If you look carefully its not just a tyre, its 2, suggesting to me that the steel is still inside it, its the whole darn axle!!!
