Recently I've been going back to this gem of a game and I was wondering. How many of you have played it? I remember having a blast playing it with my brother in LAN. Perhaps we could set up a couple of rounds should anyone else have it too, who knows?

My favorite civilizations of the game are the Spanish and the Britons.
I have all the AOEs, and beta tested AOE Online as well

Nick, Ade, JB, a guy named Eire, and me, used to play this using either Hamachi or voobly, I something else. Can't remember exactly. It's still a charming game. Back then Voobly supported a mod that ran the game in higher resolutions.
Britons are my favourite. Spanish, were overpowered imo.
Back in the day, wayyyyyyy way back, I designed custom scenarios.
I also played in that group in the latter days of its existence. My friends and I use Gameranger and it works every time (if your NAT types match up). I'd love to play with yall if you're planning a run
Hey, whenever we have a couple of hours to spare. I'm down for some AOE rounds.
If this happens, then what would we use: GameRanger, Voobly, Hamachi?
You've got red grass and purple water? I can help with that. I used the w7ddpatcher (option 9).
I'd prefer Gameranger because it's the only program I haven't had any problems with. But it we have to have compatible NAT types. If not then it's a no-go.
I suppose we can find out through experimentation. What are the chances we get compatible NAT types, eh?
I'll catch you whenever you get your rig set up, and then we can test if Gameranger works.
Bumping with an interesting remastering of the series.

What do you guys think? I think it's pretty neat, though it diminishes the value of my current copy. It's nice to get better graphics, game support, and multiplayer on Steam.
Good find.
I would play this 2D rendered-3D-posotioned kind of games any day before 3D strategies these days. It all looks calm, organized, and rich in detail. The only 3D strategies worth playing over and over were ANNO series as well as Stronghold series, and for modern warfare Faces Of War and Men Of War.
The problem with this HD version of AOE 2 is that it's not HD enough, even Stronghold Crusader has sort of better textures, and I doubt there are more players in MP than in the original. The other thing is the price, 17 eur is kind of a lot for such a game.
Anyway, I would buy it, sadly I don't want to because I have to work a lot as season comes in, and there's no room for more games at the moment, maybe after few months from now on if you guys still play this I will join but not now.
If you, unlike me, have time to play many games and like AOE 2 a lot, try Rise Of Nations, Stronghold, Stronghold Crusader, Stronghold Kingdoms (Free), Generals, Red Alert, etc
It's sad how Microsoft dropped AOE though.

I still play this alone, but don't know how to do it online.
I would be interested!
Agreed, the Steam price is steep, but I'll probably get it.
Maven, Stronghold and Stronghold crusaders HD remakes can be gotten on the cheap at gog. Don't have the HD versions, but I loved the originals.
Well, while I think the HD version is neat, I don't see myself buying this any time soon. Because, although "standard quality", I already have the game and it works fine on SP and can work on MP. The fact that I don't have Steam installed doesn't help, either.
Most likely both original and HD versions will not be compatible between each other, so that's something to keep in mind too.
Hey, if a bunch of you plan to buy this version at the current price (17.00), perhaps you can get a discount by buying a 4-pack, 2 bucks less.
Anyhow, how bout a match one of these weekends through GameRanger? Unless there's a better alternative.
That's freaking awesome! I didn't know there were HD versions of those
Can you give me some links? Perhaps I can save those so when I get to play more games I get them.
About AOE 2 HD, if the game is recently released, if you wait for a bit there will be a price drop.
About Steam, sure it sucks in many ways, but Steam came a long way. I used to accuse Steam of so many wrongs but after Steam went out of beta reently things changed, it's now very much stable and smooth experience. The only die-hard annoying thing about it is that you must run steam to play your games, a rare exception is ArmA 2
Speaking of steam, if any of you have it, do send me a pm here and I will add you.

Thanks a bunch, link saved
5 bucks for a game that is awesome and supports 8 player MP online is just sweet. I have the tremolo song looping in my head now lol.
By the way, if any of you get AOE 2 HD, do post a review, I'd like to read one 1st hand.
